Bird Nesting Season

Every year between March and August, many wild birds begin their nesting season. During this time birds build nests in hedges, trees and dense shrubs where they lay eggs and raise their young. Hedges are particularly important habitats because they provide shelter from predators and weather, as well as a safe place for chicks to develop before leaving the nest.
Because of this, Stokenchurch Parish Council avoids routine hedge cutting and heavy vegetation works during the nesting season. Disturbing hedges during this period can destroy active nests or cause parent birds to abandon their eggs or chicks. Protecting these habitats helps support local wildlife and ensures bird populations can continue to thrive in our village.
This approach also follows UK wildlife legislation, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it an offence to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use.
Where hedge work is absolutely necessary for safety reasons, checks will always be carried out beforehand to ensure no active nests are present. By limiting hedge cutting during the nesting season, Stokenchurch Parish Council is helping to protect the wildlife that makes our local environment special.
